Comic Strip Gag Writing: Spring Fever or Global Warming?

PC & Pixel by Tak Bui

Ready or not, here comes Summer!

... But before you start digging through the closet to see if your beach wear still fits, here's a dose of Spring from a few recently published PC and Pixel comic strip gags that I wrote-- Enjoy!

April 10, 2007

When writing a gag for the strip, I try to make the descriptions clear enough so that their message gets across, but I also try to leave enough room for Tak to be creative with the artwork. Sometimes Tak's visual interpretation of my gag writing is a little different than how I pictured the strip in my head. By no means is that any fault to him. After all, it's his strip.

But then there are times when he hits a home run!

Here's a sample of the original text that I submitted ...

1. PC is walking down the street on a blustery spring day.

2. Suddenly, he’s smacked in the face by a stray newspaper page (you can see the form of his face protruding, while the tail ends flap in the wind behind him).

3. PC starts turning around, trying to peel the page away with both hands.

4. Facing the opposite direction, he holds out the page with both hands, and it expands out like a parachute -- Pulling him through the air, and giving him the
opportunity to read the headline:

- “Strong winds in forecast.”

(Alternatively, the headline could read: “VIOLENT winds in forecast” and you might see something like a tire or garbage can flying towards him from behind.)

And here's the strip ...

And finally, let's not forget about the cause of all this wild and wacky weather ...
